Who is behind this
BillTruth is a comparison tool built and run by one person in Texas. It sells nothing, it is owned by no energy company, and it ranks plans by one number: what a year of electricity would actually cost your household.
Why this exists
Texas retailers quote a price at exactly 1,000 kilowatt hours a month, and the whole market has been engineered around that one number. A plan can advertise a rate it only charges if you land within a few kilowatt hours of the magic figure, hang a bill credit off a threshold your house clears in August and misses in March, and still print a single tidy number on Power to Choose.
The fine print that explains all of this is published. Every certified plan has an Electricity Facts Label, and it is a public document. It is just tedious enough that nobody reads it, which is precisely why the tricks work. One person got tired of that and built the tool that reads the fine print instead — every label, every plan, month by month.
What this is
An independent comparison tool. Not a retail electric provider: we cannot sell you electricity and never will. Not a broker. Not affiliated with the PUCT or Power to Choose. And not owned by any company whose plans it ranks — which is worth saying out loud, because several comparison sites are.
How it makes money
Affiliate commissions. When somebody signs up for a plan through a link here, the retailer may pay us a fee. It never changes your price, and it never changes the order of the results: rankings are set by the arithmetic, and the arithmetic does not know which retailers pay us.
That is the whole business model, and the reason it is printed at the top of every page rather than buried at the bottom of one. A comparison site that hides how it earns is asking you to guess whether the ranking is real.
How the math works
We read each plan’s fact label for its energy charge, base charge, bill credits and minimum-usage fees, add the delivery charges your utility sets, and compute a bill for each of twelve months at your usage rather than at an average. Then we add the twelve months up and rank by that total, because a year is the only horizon on which a threshold credit tells the truth.
