What BillTruth is

An independent comparison tool. We take the list of certified retail electricity plans published by the Public Utility Commission of Texas, read each plan’s Electricity Facts Label, and compute what a year of that plan would cost a household at a stated usage level. That is the entire product.

We are not an electricity retailer, a broker, an aggregator or an agent. We cannot sell you electricity, sign you up, cancel a contract, fix a billing dispute or restore your power. Not affiliated with the PUCT or Power to Choose.

How we make money

We may earn a commission when you sign up through our links — it never changes your price. Rankings are set by math, not by who pays us.

Concretely: when you click through to a retailer and complete a signup, some retailers pay us a one-time bounty. It is paid by the retailer out of its marketing budget and does not change the price you pay by a cent — the rate you get is the rate on the fact label.

The ranking is computed before the affiliate configuration is consulted, and the code that decides the order has no access to it. A retailer that pays us nothing is ordered by exactly the same arithmetic as one that pays well, and plenty of plans at the top of our lists earn us nothing at all. If that ever stops being true, this page will say so.

We do not accept payment for placement, we do not exclude retailers who decline to pay us, and we do not adjust the usage assumptions to flatter anybody.

What you should and should not rely on

Our figures are estimates. They are careful ones — we check our reading of each fact label by recomputing the retailer’s own published prices from it — but an estimate is what they are, for three unavoidable reasons:

• We do not know your actual usage. Unless you upload meter data we are modelling it, and a household that uses electricity differently from our seasonal curve will see different bills.
• Prices change. Plans are withdrawn, rates are refiled, and delivery charges are reset roughly every March and September. We refresh nightly, which means a plan can change between our last check and your signup.
• Some plans are labelled estimated because we could not read their fact label cleanly and had to solve the rate structure from three published prices instead. Those are marked wherever they appear and can be filtered out entirely.

Before you sign anything, read the Electricity Facts Label for the plan you are actually signing up to. We link to it on every plan page. It is the legally controlling document; we are a calculator. If our number and the label disagree, the label is right and we would like to know about it.

Nothing here is financial, legal or energy-procurement advice, and we are not liable for a decision you make on the basis of an estimate. Your contract is with the retailer.

Data we get from elsewhere

Plan lists, advertised prices, retailer names, logos and document links come from Power to Choose and from retailers’ own published labels. We do not control that data and cannot correct it at source. Retailer names and logos belong to those retailers and appear here for identification; their use does not imply any endorsement of us or by us.

Our own computed figures, page copy and design are ours. You are very welcome to quote a figure or screenshot a receipt with a link back; please do not scrape the site wholesale or republish it as your own comparison.

Using the site fairly

Use it as much as you like. Do not attempt to break it, do not hammer it with automated requests, and do not use it to send unsolicited email to anybody. We fetch other people’s documents at no more than one request a second with an identifying user agent, and we ask for the same courtesy.

Reminder emails

If you set a contract reminder, you are asking us to send you one email around a specific date. Every message carries a working one-click unsubscribe. The privacy page sets out precisely what we store, which is very little.

Availability

This runs on a small server and is offered as-is, with no uptime guarantee. If our nightly refresh fails we keep the previous data and put a banner on the site telling you how old it is, rather than showing stale prices as though they were current.

Changes and governing law

These terms may change; the date at the top will change with them. They are governed by the laws of the State of Texas.
